Hut Trip Packing List

Everything you need for a trip to Gondola Village at Holy Cross

Here is our recommended Packing List for hut trips in Colorado. The first list includes items that should be included regardless of season, while season-specific additional are at the bottom. Many of these items are specific to Gondola Village, while others may be useful for packing for trips to other hut systems (like the 10th mountain hut system, or BC backcountry lodges)

All season hut trip needs:

Gear:

35-75 liter pack

Toiletries

Weather forecast

Sleeping bag liner

Headlamp

Emergency shelter 

Firestarter

First aid kit

Map (summit terrain, nat geo) and compass

Sat messenger (Garmin Inreach, etc)

Food and Beverage: 

Food (*Check out the food offerings from Good to-go -- we swear by their meals for trips to Gondola Village at Holy Cross)

Cold and warm beverages (*Keep in mind altitude and alcohol don’t always mix well. A seltzer or juice can taste great after a long hike.)

Water (*At least 1 liter per person for the hike in; more in winter)

Clothes / Footwear

Hiking boots or trail running shoes (*Make sure these are well-fitting and worn in)

Puffy jacket

Buff / neck gaiter

Camp shoes / hut booties (like the Chaco Ramble Puff)

Lightweight, comfy, clean clothes for relaxing

Hiking pants and shirt(s)

Sunglasses 

Sunscreen

Rain jacket

Wool socks

Long underwear

Gloves

Warm hat

For Summer, you'll want to add:

Towel + swimsuit for lake and shower

For Early / late summer season (May / June and sometimes early July, late September to November), you'll want to add:

Microspikes and gaiters, snowshoes if significant snow is expected on the trail

For Winter, you'll want to add: 

Early / late season (November into early December, late March into May): trail running shoes or hiking boots (in case 703 road isnt snow covered)

Since the hike-in is so strenuous, it is highly recommended that you pack the gear needed to be able to spend the night outside on your way in or out if necessary.
